Chapter 14

Don

Clio, Michigan

March 28

Don sat beside Noah, fighting back tears, and swore to himself. All of this was his fault, and if things had gone just a bit better, he and Noah could have been passing out textbooks to the kids and promising they’d get more soon. Now, instead of that, Noah was fighting for his life, a gash in his abdomen, and he’d lost a lot of blood. He kept going in and out of consciousness and called for Chloe whenever he could mutter. She hadn’t left his side since he’d been brought in.

The ride back to the house had been horrible, and Don barely remembered it. He’d already felt woozy when he and his dad had brought Noah back to the truck. Then had come the strenuous task of loading up the guy Don had shot too, with his kid screaming and shouting the entire way. The only reason any of them had gotten out of there was because of Doug. Don had all but frozen, but being bossed around and shouted at had actually done him some good. There was a good chance that was the only reason Noah was still alive. The father, too.

“We’ll need to wash his wound every few hours, and if it starts to look worse, it’d be best if we ran him through some antibiotics,” Samantha said softly, her gaze moving between Chloe, Don, and Jill.

Noah laid on Don’s bed, wearing only his pants. His shirt and other bloody clothes had been tossed into the basement to be washed later. The rifle and pistol he carried were still in the truck.

“I-I’ll be around to make sure that’s done. T-The kids already have clean washcloths set out and ready to go,” Chloe replied from the side of the bed. Tears were still in her eyes, and more had dried down her cheeks.

Jill put her hand on Noah’s forehead and stared at his wound. “He’s not burning up, so we might be good. I’ll keep an eye on him, too, just in case. If you don’t have dinner plans for the night, just leave it to me,” she said.

Don sucked in a breath, pulling the snot back into his nose, and wiped at his eyes. He’d managed to hold back most of his tears, but the waterworks would have flowed endlessly if he’d been alone. If the guilt plaguing him hadn’t been overwhelming, now was the breaking point. Things didn’t have to pan out the way they had at the school, but… they had. Noah had been the selfless one, placing himself between the man with the knife and Don, and he’d paid the price. It’d come from out of nowhere, but based on the damage to the backpack, Don knew what had happened.

Evident by the knife gash through two parts of the backpack and the slash to some of the textbooks, Don assumed Noah had jumped in front of him to try and use the thick books to stop the attack. ‘Tried’ was
